Rare Giant ‘Phantom’ Jellyfish Spotted in Deep Sea, Video Goes Viral

**Islamabad (Qudrat Daily):** Scientists have captured footage of a rare, giant “Phantom” jellyfish (*Stygiomedusa gigantea*) during a deep-sea expedition.

The jellyfish was observed nearly 830 feet below the ocean surface in the Colorado Rausen Submarine Canyon near Argentina. About the size of a school bus, the jellyfish has a width of 3.3 feet, while its four ribbon-like arms can extend over 33 feet (10 meters).

Experts note that only 120 sightings of this rare marine creature have been recorded in the past 110 years. Unlike other jellyfish, the giant phantom jellyfish does not sting its prey but captures it by wrapping its long arms around it.

The footage was captured by remotely operated vehicle (ROV) pilots exploring the canyon walls as part of a deep-sea mapping research mission led by Argentine scientists. During the expedition, researchers recorded the Phantom jellyfish along with 28 other potentially new marine species.

This remarkable discovery offers new insights into the largely unexplored depths of the ocean and highlights the diversity of life in the deep sea.
