346 Buildings Declared Dangerous in Lahore Ahead of Basant, Walled City Authority Tells LHC

Lahore: The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has declared 346 buildings in Lahore as dangerous ahead of the Basant season, according to a report submitted to the Lahore High Court (LHC) during the hearing of petitions seeking a ban on kite-flying.
The authority informed the court that it has completed a detailed survey of dilapidated and unsafe buildings in the city prior to Basant. The report states that out of the 346 dangerous structures, 183 buildings are beyond repair, while 163 can be repaired.
According to the report, 92 extremely dilapidated and hazardous buildings have already been evacuated. However, 254 dangerous buildings are still occupied, as residents could not be relocated despite the risks. Among the occupied buildings, 103 have been declared beyond repair, while 151 are considered repairable.
The WCLA further reported that among the evacuated buildings, 80 are fit for demolition, whereas 12 can be repaired. The authority warned that the rooftops of these dangerous structures are unsafe for Basant-related activities, posing a serious threat to public safety.
To prevent any untoward incidents during Basant, the Walled City Authority has initiated measures to ban the use of unsafe rooftops. Warning notices and public awareness banners are being displayed across affected areas.
The report also urged the district administration to seal dangerous rooftops and parts of unsafe buildings. Additionally, it recommended the deployment of police and paramilitary forces during Basant to ensure public safety and enforce restrictions.
