PPP MNA Shahla Raza Criticizes Political Exploitation of Gul Plaza Fire, Cites Other Incidents

Karachi: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Member of National Assembly Shahla Raza criticized the politicization of the Gul Plaza fire incident in the National Assembly, calling it unusual that a single event is being used to debate issues as broad as the 18th Amendment and basic education.
Shahla Raza noted that a fire in New Zealand had killed 40 people, while in Lahore, three fires had occurred at the Hafeez Center, yet no political controversy arose. “It’s a fire; these things happen,” she said.
She highlighted the historical significance of Sindh, stating that it is one of the oldest regions with a welcoming history toward migrants. “It is the only province that welcomed migrants wholeheartedly,” she added.
Regarding the Gul Plaza tragedy, Shahla Raza questioned why, despite 24 entry and exit points, the building’s gates were reportedly closed and why the fire did not extinguish even after water was applied, suggesting that the chemical composition of the blaze might have contributed. She also cited traffic delays as a factor that slowed the fire brigade’s response.
Shahla Raza emphasized the need for local government systems but cautioned against using the incident to settle personal or political scores. “If there are grievances, they should be addressed appropriately,” she said.
