Karachi’s Gul Plaza Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 26 as Rescue Operations Continue

**Karachi:** Rescue operations are ongoing at the **Gul Plaza shopping mall** on M.A. Jinnah Road after a massive fire broke out late Saturday night, resulting in **26 confirmed deaths** and dozens of missing persons.

The fire, which engulfed approximately **40% of the building**, caused suffocation and severe burns, with 13 victims already identified. **Authorities continue to remove debris and recover bodies**, while the exact final toll remains uncertain.

Rescue teams, including **Rescue 1122, Fire Brigade, Pakistan Navy, and Sindh Rangers**, are operating at multiple points simultaneously. Chief Operating Officer of Rescue 1122, **Dr. Abid Jalaluddin Sheikh**, stated that **three search operations are ongoing**, with teams using heavy machinery and snorcles to ensure the safety of trapped individuals. Many bodies have been recovered in parts, requiring forensic verification for identification.

Survivors described a harrowing escape through smoke-filled corridors. One young man, **Khalid**, narrated that he barely managed to exit the building, losing consciousness before regaining it in a hospital.

Authorities have reported **over 75 missing persons**, with families providing details to **CPLC and local police** for tracing. Efforts are underway to ensure identification of victims through **DNA testing**.

Officials including **Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, and Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal** have visited the site, offering condolences and overseeing rescue and relief operations. The building, constructed in the 1980s with over **1,200 shops**, suffered severe structural damage. Fire Brigade Chief **Humayun Ahmed** warned that clearing the debris could take **15–17 days**, and sections of the structure remain at risk of collapse.
