Google AI Health Summaries Under Scrutiny for Providing Misleading Medical Advice

Islamabad: A recent investigation by British newspaper The Guardian has revealed that Google’s AI-powered “overviews,” which appear at the top of search results, sometimes provide inaccurate and misleading health information that could pose serious risks to users.

While Google claims these AI summaries are helpful and reliable, experts have identified several cases where the advice could be harmful. In one instance, Google advised pancreatic cancer patients to avoid high-fat diets, a recommendation that specialists say is completely incorrect and potentially dangerous for patient health.

Similarly, information provided about liver function tests was inaccurate, potentially leading severely ill individuals to believe they were healthy. Misleading details were also given about women’s cancer screenings, such as Pap tests, with some overviews incorrectly suggesting they screened for vaginal cancer, which is factually wrong.

Health professionals and charities have warned that such misinformation can deter people from seeking proper medical care and may result in life-threatening consequences. Sophie Randall, director of a patient rights forum, said Google’s AI overviews “pose a risk to users’ health by presenting incorrect information in online searches.” Stephanie Parker from My Cure Charity added, “People rely on the internet in times of distress, and inaccurate information can be harmful.”

The Guardian report also highlighted examples where Google AI overviews gave dangerous advice regarding mental health issues and dietary habits. Experts emphasize that such misleading information may prevent people from seeking essential treatment.

Google responded by stating that most AI overviews are accurate and helpful, and the company is working to improve quality. However, specialists insist that inaccurate AI-generated search results present a serious health risk.
