Astronomers Discover “Failed Galaxy” With No Stars

Astronomers have discovered a rare and unusual cosmic object that contains no stars, leading scientists to describe it as a “failed galaxy.”

According to researchers, the object—named **Cloud-9**—is a massive cloud of gas located approximately **14 million light-years** away from Earth. It is almost invisible in normal light, which is why it remained undetected for so long.

Scientists say Cloud-9 is a remnant of the early universe. While it contains large amounts of gas and dark matter, it never formed stars. Dark matter is the invisible substance believed to make up most of the universe’s mass and plays a key role in galaxy formation.

NASA scientists explain that in the early universe, some dark matter halos were able to gather gas but failed to trigger the process of star formation. As a result, these unique starless or “failed” galaxies came into existence and largely went unnoticed.

The discovery of Cloud-9 is expected to help astronomers better understand how galaxies form—and why, in some cases, they fail to develop at all. Researchers believe this finding could provide new insights into the role of dark matter and the conditions required for star formation in the universe.
