Powerful Western Weather System Hits Balochistan, Snowfall Expected in Quetta and Chaman; Cold Intensifies

**Quetta:** A strong western weather system has entered Balochistan, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms to areas including Gwadar, Jiwani, Turbat, Tamp, Mand, Dasht, Bela, Qalat, and Sanjawi. According to the Meteorological Department, the new spell of winter rains has significantly intensified the cold, with temperatures dropping below freezing in several regions.
The department has warned of possible snowfall in high-altitude areas such as Quetta, Chaman, Kachlak, Muslim Bagh, Dareh Kozhak Top, and Kan Mehtarzai. Another spell of snowfall is also forecast from January 20. Sanjawi and surrounding areas are experiencing a severe cold wave, with minimum temperatures dropping to minus 7°C. Additional snowfall is expected in valleys and hilly areas including Choytar, Shireen, Nashpa, Zaralin, and Poi Sharif, likely further lowering temperatures.
The National Highway Authority (NHA) Balochistan has declared that snow removal machinery and trained personnel will be deployed 24/7 along critical routes including Quetta-Chaman, Kachlak, and Muslim Bagh. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has completed all preparations on national highways in anticipation of snowfall.
During snowfall at Kan Mehtarzai, a collision between two vehicles left five people injured; they were immediately transferred to the hospital by PDMA rescue teams. In Quetta, intermittent rain has been accompanied by lightning, while the first winter rains in Bela and surrounding areas have intensified the cold, emptying markets as residents focused on purchasing warm clothing and beverages.
In Qalat, intermittent rain continues, with minimum temperatures recorded at minus 1°C over the past 24 hours, and rainfall expected to persist until December 31. Heavy rain in Turbat and various areas of Kech district has caused water accumulation in low-lying areas, though no casualties or property damage have been reported so far. Power outages have occurred on several feeders due to the rain.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly travelers and those in hilly areas, to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety measures.
