Sugar Prices Drop Nationwide After Government Crackdown on Hoarders

*Islamabad (Qudrat Daily):* Sugar prices have declined across Pakistan following strict action by the government against artificial price hikes and hoarding, providing much-needed relief to consumers. The impact of this reduction is especially visible in major commercial centers of Punjab and Karachi.
According to market sources, coordinated measures by federal and provincial authorities against profiteers and hoarders have started yielding positive results. Improved supply chains, strict monitoring, and continuous crackdowns have helped stabilize the market, leading to a noticeable decrease in sugar prices nationwide.
In Karachi’s wholesale market, sugar prices, which had earlier crossed Rs200 per kilogram, have now dropped to around Rs150 per kilogram. In some areas, wholesale rates have fallen further to as low as Rs146 per kilogram. A similar trend is being observed in Punjab, where wholesale sugar prices have come down to approximately Rs145 per kilogram.
Chairman of the Wholesale Grocers Association, Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, termed this development a success of government policies. He said that decisive action against profiteering and artificial shortages played a key role in restoring market balance.
He added that forward sugar deals are currently being settled at around Rs135 per kilogram, indicating the possibility of further price reductions in the coming weeks. With the ongoing sugarcane crushing season, improved production, and continuous monitoring, prices could potentially decline further, even reaching Rs100 per kilogram if the current momentum continues.
Traders have also confirmed that ample sugar stocks are available across the country, ensuring uninterrupted supply. Approximately 150,000 tons of imported sugar are currently stored in various warehouses, which has reduced pressure on the market.
Market participants believe that if the government maintains strict oversight of the supply chain and continues action against hoarders, price stability can be sustained. Meanwhile, consumers have welcomed the decline in sugar prices and expressed hope that the reduction at the wholesale level will soon be reflected in retail markets, further easing the financial burden on the general public.
