Peshawar: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has alleged that the corrupt elements in the federal government have committed historic corruption worth Rs5,300 billion, severely damaging Pakistan’s economy.
During an unannounced and informal visit to the Economics Department of the University of Peshawar, CM Afridi engaged directly with students and emphasized the need for the university’s financial self-sufficiency. He instructed the Vice Chancellor to propose actionable measures to enhance the institution’s financial stability.
The chief minister revealed that under the National Highway Program (NHP), the federal government owes over Rs2,200 billion to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Additionally, Rs1,375 billion remain due under the NFC award for merged districts. He also highlighted that billions are pending in water charges.
To support students residing in university hostels, he requested proposals to provide meals at subsidized rates. CM Afridi also announced upgrades to the Economics Department’s computer lab and unveiled plans to solarize the Economics, Political Science, and IM Studies departments at a combined cost of Rs53 million.
He stressed that these initiatives aim to empower students, improve university infrastructure, and mitigate the financial impact of federal arrears on the province.
