Indian Fast Bowler Harshit Rana Fined for Inappropriate Gesture Against South Africa

Ranchi: Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana faced disciplinary action from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi.

According to the ICC, Rana violated Article 2.5, which relates to words, gestures, or actions that could provoke or cause offense to a batter after taking their wicket. The incident occurred in the 22nd over of South Africa’s innings when Rana made a gesture toward the dressing room after dismissing Dewald Brevis that was deemed potentially provocative.

As a result, Rana received one demerit point on his disciplinary record, marking his first point in 24 months. Accepting his mistake, Rana agreed to the sanction proposed by ICC Elite Panel match referee Richie Richardson, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.

The charge was initially brought forward by on-field umpires Jiarmin Madan Gopal, Sam Nogaski, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit. For a Level 1 violation, players can receive a warning, a fine of up to 50% of their match fee, and one or two demerit points.
