Sindh Cabinet Approves One-Year Extension for Rangers in Karachi; Green Initiatives and DHA Pipeline Rates Also Discussed

**Karachi:** The Sindh Cabinet has approved a one-year extension for the deployment of Rangers in Karachi, according to Express News. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

Under the Anti-Terrorism Act, the Rangers will continue to assist the police with full powers. The new deployment period will take effect from December 9, 2025.

**Carbon Finance Strategy and Environmental Initiatives:**
The cabinet also approved a carbon finance strategy for the redevelopment of brownfield sites. Chief Minister Shah emphasized utilizing carbon finance through the Environment Department to redevelop these sites. Plans include converting unused land into renewable energy projects, establishing solar parks and wind farms on old industrial areas, and converting dumping grounds into biogas or waste-to-energy plants.

Additionally, the Forestry Department will implement large-scale afforestation and wetland projects. The Chief Minister directed modernization of the Jam Chakro landfill and upgrades to other waste sites. Measures for mangrove restoration, urban forests, and green belts were also approved, promoting nature-based solutions for environmental management. CM Shah reiterated support for the federal government’s national strategy for brownfield redevelopment.

**DHA Pipeline Project Water Rates:**
The cabinet approved a revision of water rates for the DHA pipeline project, reducing the cost from Rs. 0.85 to Rs. 0.60 per gallon, while maintaining a 10-year payment period. The revised rates were proposed after negotiations between the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KW&SB) and DHA, keeping in mind financial sustainability and affordability for DHA.
