Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb Says 54,000 Vacant Posts Abolished, Saving Rs 56 Billion Annually

Islamabad:** Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has announced that the government has abolished 54,000 vacant posts across various departments, a move expected to save the national exchequer **Rs 56 billion annually**. He added that the process of merging and eliminating several ministries and divisions is currently underway.
Speaking at an event organized by the Pakistan Business Council in Islamabad, Aurangzeb said the government is advancing reforms aimed at economic stability, competitiveness, and fiscal discipline.
He stated that the agenda for **complete digitalization of the tax system** is progressing rapidly, with efforts being made to shift Pakistan from a cash-based economy to a fully **documented economy**.
Aurangzeb said that the **average debt maturity** has now increased to four years, reducing refinancing risks. The abolishment of empty posts, he said, is part of broader structural reforms.
The finance minister projected economic growth of **3.5%** this year, with expectations of reaching **4%** next year. In the medium term, growth could rise to **6–7%**, he added. Aurangzeb also revealed that a regulatory framework for **cryptocurrencies and digital assets** is close to becoming operational.
He emphasised that boosting exports is essential for Pakistan’s economic progress and noted that the private sector is playing a leading role in driving the country forward.
Aurangzeb also informed that the **first meeting of the 11th NFC Award** will be held on **December 4**.
