27th Constitutional Amendment: Current Chief Justice to Retain Title Until Term Completion

ISLAMABAD: The government presented **eight new amendments** under the **27th Constitutional Amendment** in the National Assembly, including changes to **Article 176**, stipulating that the current Chief Justice will continue to be referred to as the **Chief Justice of Pakistan** until the completion of their term.
During the National Assembly session, **Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarrar** introduced the amendment bill, stating that the **27th Amendment’s framework** had already been shared in the Senate and emphasizing that amendments to the law and constitution are part of an **evolutionary process**.
Under the proposed amendments, four clauses were removed while four new clauses were added. Key changes include:
* **Article 6, Clause 2:** The term *Federal Constitutional Court* was incorporated.
* **Article 10:** The words *Supreme Court* were added.
* **Article 176:** The current Chief Justice will retain the title of **Chief Justice of Pakistan** until the end of their term.
* **Article 255, Clause 2:** Modifications pertain to the appointment of the Chief Justice after the current term.
Law Minister Tarrar clarified that **Justice Yahya Afridi** will remain the Chief Justice of Pakistan, and the **senior-most judge** among the Supreme Court and Federal Constitutional Court will be designated as the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
The amendment reflects the government’s efforts to formalize the succession and designation process for the country’s top judicial post.
