Mufti Taqi Usmani Says Lifetime Immunity for President Violates Shariah and Constitution

*Islamabad (Qudrat News)* — **Mufti Taqi Usmani**, the Grand Mufti of Pakistan, has strongly criticized the 27th Constitutional Amendment that grants **lifetime immunity to the President**, stating that such protection contradicts both **Islamic principles and the spirit of the Constitution**.

In a message shared on social media platform *X*, Mufti Usmani emphasized that **no individual, regardless of their position or authority, is above judicial proceedings in Islam**. He cited the example of the **Rightly Guided Caliphs (Khulafa-e-Rashideen)** to illustrate that even leaders are accountable under the law.

He warned that providing the President with lifelong immunity is **un-Islamic and dishonorable for the nation**, urging **parliamentarians not to bear the burden of such a grave sin**. He prayed that Allah protects the country from this dishonor.

The remarks come after the **Senate approved the amendment by a majority vote**, which modifies **Article 248** to grant the President legal protection for life, even after leaving office. Under the amendment, **no legal action can be taken against a former President during their lifetime**, though the immunity would **cease if the individual assumes another public office**.

The amendment was presented by **Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar** and passed following requests from the **Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)**. Mufti Usmani’s criticism reflects growing concerns over the **legal and religious implications of lifetime immunity for state leaders**.
