KP Name Change Delayed by Government; ANP Backs 27th Amendment Despite Unmet Demand

Islamabad: Central President of the Awami National Party (ANP), Aimal Wali Khan, stated in a media briefing at Parliament House that no new constitutional amendment is being introduced — only the existing one is under consideration. He added that regarding the name of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a request had been made by all parties to defer the matter for one to two months.

Khan noted that the government has no shortage of numbers to pass the amendment and praised the Prime Minister for refusing exemptions, calling it a commendable step. “No one should receive exemptions; everyone must be held accountable,” he said.

Political analysts have pointed out a clear contradiction in ANP’s stance. Previously, the party had declared it would support the 27th Constitutional Amendment only if it included the renaming of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, despite this demand not being met, Aimal Wali Khan announced support for the government, which is being seen as a major U-turn in the party’s position.
