FBR Grade-17 Officer Dismissed Over Poor Investigation in Rs238 Billion Tax Fraud Case

KARACHI: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has dismissed a Grade-17 officer for gross negligence in investigating a massive sales tax fraud case involving 12 fake companies.

According to the official report, a case worth Rs238.42 billion was registered on March 26, 2024. Senior Auditor Altaf Hussain Khuhro of Regional Tax Office (RTO) One was found guilty of serious lapses in the probe. Despite the magnitude of the case, no nominated suspect was arrested within eight days of registration.

The report further revealed that for 55 days, no efforts were made to apprehend any accused, allowing two suspects to secure bail from the court due to the investigation’s delay. The charge sheet submitted by the senior auditor allegedly benefited the accused instead of strengthening the prosecution’s case.

The FBR has now terminated Altaf Hussain Khuhro from service, citing misconduct and gross negligence. Investigations found that he had issued fake tax refunds worth Rs197 million to six bogus companies. Out of this, Rs117.4 million has been recovered, while Rs79.8 million in illegal refunds remains outstanding.
