Don’t Know Why Asif Afridi Is Being Criticized; Age Is Just a Number: Azhar Mahmood

LAHORE: Pakistan Red Ball Team’s interim head coach **Azhar Mahmood** has defended **Asif Afridi’s selection**, saying he doesn’t understand why the left-arm spinner is facing criticism.
Speaking to the media in Lahore, Azhar Mahmood said, “Asif Afridi is not here just for net practice; he is part of the team. He earned his place through strong performances in domestic cricket. As far as age is concerned, it’s just a number.”
He explained that Afridi was included in the squad due to **concussion substitution rules**, adding that **South Africa has also brought an experienced spinner aged 38**.
Commenting on the upcoming series, Azhar Mahmood said, “In the West Indies series, there was a lot of spin, and it was tough for the batters. We know South Africa’s strengths — they are a Test Championship team — and our goal is to take 20 wickets.”
He added that the pitch conditions will differ from those in England and the West Indies but will still offer **gradual spin**. “All our players have been playing consistently, which gives us an advantage. We have six home Tests in this cycle, and if we stick to our plans, we can perform well in the Test Championship this time,” he said.
The coach confirmed that **Mohammad Rizwan** remains the team’s **main wicketkeeper**, with **Rohail Nazir** as his backup in the format.
Regarding the playing XI, Azhar Mahmood said, “We haven’t yet decided whether to go with **two fast bowlers and two spinners** or **one pacer and three spinners**. The final decision will be made on match day.”
