State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry Apologizes Over Islamabad Press Club Incident

Islamabad: Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry has issued an unconditional apology over the Islamabad Press Club incident, where police officers stormed the premises and allegedly assaulted journalists.
Speaking at the National Press Club Islamabad, Chaudhry said, *“As soon as I learned of the incident, I strongly condemned it, and I am here before you today. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi immediately sent me here to express our regret.”*
He described the police action as “unfortunate and sudden,” explaining that members of the Kashmir Action Committee had clashed with police during a protest. According to him, the protesters manhandled police officials, including an SP and an SHO, leading to a pursuit that extended to the Press Club premises.
Chaudhry announced that the Interior Minister has ordered an internal inquiry into the matter. *“I once again condemn this incident and apologize on behalf of Islamabad Police and the Interior Ministry. I hope you will accept our apology,”* he said, adding that journalists’ decision on the matter would be fully respected.
He further emphasized, *“We are the defenders of freedom of expression, and it is through you that our voice reaches the people. I apologize to all journalist representatives.”*
Later, Press Information Officer (PIO) Mubashir Hassan also arrived at the National Press Club to meet the journalists.
It may be recalled that Islamabad Police raided the Press Club, vandalized its cafeteria, and allegedly assaulted journalists inside, sparking strong condemnation from the media community.
