US War Secretary Summons Global Military Commanders for Rare Meeting in Virginia

Washington: U.S. War Secretary **Pete Hegseth** has called an extraordinary gathering of senior American military commanders from around the world next week in Quantico, Virginia, according to five officials familiar with the development.
The meeting is being described as highly unusual, given the short notice and the sheer number of top generals and admirals expected to be in the same room. Some officers, who command tens of thousands of troops across regions like South Korea, Japan, and the Middle East, have had to abruptly reshuffle their schedules.
An American official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said participants are scrambling to adjust their plans and determine whether their attendance is mandatory. While it remains unclear exactly how many officers will be present, observers note that such a concentration of senior leaders in one place is “rare.”
When asked for details, Pentagon spokesperson **Sean Purnell** confirmed only that the War Secretary would address his senior commanders early next week. He declined to comment on the number of participants, the purpose of the meeting, or the reason for the sudden summons.
President Donald Trump has recently ordered the Pentagon’s name to be officially changed from the “Department of Defense” to the “Department of War,” a move that still requires congressional approval.
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President **J.D. Vance** downplayed speculation, saying that such a gathering was “not entirely unusual.”
Still, the lack of clarity has fueled uncertainty. As one official put it, “This could be routine, but the absence of explanation doesn’t help anyone.”
