Punjab Launches Pakistan’s First Advanced Air Quality Forecast System

Lahore: The Punjab government has developed the country’s first advanced Air Quality Forecast System to combat pollution and predict both weather conditions and air quality levels. The system is expected to play a vital role in reducing pollution in major cities including Lahore and Faisalabad, while also providing weekly public reports.
At the inauguration, Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb stated that the system integrates real-time monitoring with advanced scientific models and is compatible with international platforms such as Windy and European forecasting models. It will align with global air quality indices while addressing local needs. Data from newly installed air quality monitoring stations across Punjab will also be incorporated.
Currently, 41 monitoring stations are operational in Punjab, with plans to expand to 100 in the coming months. The system will not only measure pollution and track weather conditions but also issue health advisories and precautionary measures for citizens.
Aurangzeb emphasized that under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision, the system will provide a scientific basis for policymaking. It is part of Punjab’s broader Smog Control Plan, which includes crackdowns on crop residue burning, measures against vehicular and industrial emissions, and strict enforcement of environmental regulations.
She urged citizens to support the government’s efforts against environmental pollution, advising elderly people, children, and respiratory patients to take extra precautions during smog episodes and to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
