Indian Village Gets Electricity for the First Time After 78 Years of Independence

Thane:Maharashtra: In a surprising revelation about India’s development journey, a village in Maharashtra has received electricity for the first time—**78 years after independence**.
According to Indian media, the village of **Varaswadi**, located in Shahapur tehsil of Thane district, was connected to the power grid this month, bringing light to around **15 homes with nearly 60 to 80 residents**.
Officials from the **Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL)** confirmed that a new **63 kVA transformer** and **67 electricity poles** were installed at a cost of more than **5 million Indian rupees (INR)**. Electricity has now been provided to both households and streetlights.
The project was approved two years ago but faced significant delays due to the village’s **remote forest location**, which required permissions from multiple departments, particularly the forest department. Moreover, the absence of proper roads made it extremely difficult to transport poles and the transformer to the hilly terrain.
Despite these challenges, the work was finally completed with the support of local villagers.
Residents celebrated the historic moment with **fireworks and chants**, expressing joy as their homes lit up for the first time. One villager said, *“Our darkness has ended after 78 years. Now we too can celebrate Diwali with lights like others.”*
