Pakistan Railways to Outsource Passenger Trains Through Open Auction

Lahore: Pakistan Railways has decided to outsource passenger trains via an open auction system, with the new policy also applicable to ongoing outsourcing contracts. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi.

According to the plan, the annual revenue benchmark will be revised, and a committee has been formed for its review. To ensure safe train operations, the Safety Department will be upgraded into a fully empowered directorate, with staff and officers already transferred accordingly.

During the briefing, officials highlighted the poor condition of running rooms for guards and drivers. Minister Abbasi stressed that guards and drivers are the “backbone of Railways,” and their facilities—rooms, kitchens, and washrooms—must be modernized. Model running rooms will be built on modern lines, starting in Rohri, Khanpur, and Khanewal, featuring air-conditioning and common dining spaces.

The meeting also reviewed the progress of the Mechanical Department. It was reported that by March 30, a total of 295 high-capacity freight wagons will be added to the system, with all bookings shifted to an online platform starting next week.

Furthermore, all AC Standard and AC Parlor coaches of the Shalimar Express will be completely new, while passengers on Lahore–Rawalpindi railcars will enjoy improved travel with refurbished coaches being inducted by November 11. Similarly, four rakes for the Lahore–Narowal trains will be received by January 8.

Minister Abbasi stated that despite limited resources, Pakistan Railways is moving in the right direction with firm resolve.
