Ghotki Farmers Reject Sugar Mills’ Rate of Rs400 per Maund, Term it ‘Economic Murder

GHOTKI — Sugarcane growers in Ghotki have rejected the sugar mills’ newly announced rate of Rs400 per maund, calling it unacceptable and highly damaging to farmers’ livelihoods.

According to Geo News, cultivators in Obaro took to the streets in protest, staging a rally against what they described as an exploitative price set by the mills. Farmers argued that the rate does not reflect current market realities.

Farmer leader Aftab Mazari said sugar is being sold at Rs240 per kilogram, while cane is being purchased at only Rs400 per maund — a disparity that results in severe financial losses for growers. “No landowner will sell sugarcane at Rs400. DAP, diesel, urea, and sugar remain expensive. This rate is economic murder of farmers,” he added.

Meanwhile, in Sujawal district, all three sugar mills remain closed, and crushing has yet to begin — causing heightened concern and financial strain for sugarcane growers awaiting the start of the season.
