Punjab Launches Environmental Storybook for Children to Promote Green Future

Lahore: In a pioneering move, the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has introduced a special storybook for schoolchildren, aimed at raising environmental awareness and encouraging eco-friendly habits from an early age.
This is the first initiative of its kind by any government body in Pakistan. Designed for students of grades two and three, the book presents key environmental themes—such as clean air, safe water, tree plantation, waste management, and the harms of pollution—through simple and engaging stories.
With colorful illustrations and easy-to-read language, the stories are not only entertaining but also carry strong messages about protecting nature.
The launch ceremony was presided over by Punjab’s Environment Secretary Salwat Saeed and EPA Director General Imran Hamid Sheikh, while EPA Library in-charge Lubna Parveen briefed participants about the book’s content and activities. She noted that the stories and exercises are designed to instill eco-friendly behavior in children.
Officials confirmed that the book will be incorporated into both public and private school curricula, with teachers receiving special guidelines to teach it effectively. Speaking at the event, DG EPA Imran Hamid Sheikh emphasized that educating children about the environment is “the most valuable investment in the future.” Secretary Salwat Saeed added that the initiative is part of Punjab’s anti-smog and green development agenda, with the government determined to make environmental education a mandatory part of the curriculum.
Additionally, EPA announced that quizzes, competitions, and school-level activities will be organized to engage children further. Future editions of the book will cover topics such as biodiversity, recycling, and renewable energy.
Educationists and environmental experts have welcomed the initiative, calling it a timely step that will fill a long-standing gap in fostering eco-conscious attitudes and practical awareness among children.
