Pets Die After Eating Fish in Balochistan’s Kech District

Kech, Balochistan – Several domestic animals, including chickens, cats, and dogs, reportedly died after consuming fish in the Kech area, raising concerns among local residents.

According to community sources, small-sized fish locally known as *Kashuk* or *Keto*, transported from Gwadar to various parts of Makran, were fed to the animals after being cleaned. The intestines of the fish, given to pets, allegedly caused their sudden deaths.

Residents suspect marine pollution as the cause behind the toxic effects. However, WWF Pakistan rejected the claim, stating that Gwadar’s waters are not polluted. Instead, the organization suggested that fish sometimes become toxic after consuming harmful algae, which could explain the animal deaths.

WWF Technical Advisor Muhammad Moazzam Khan added that contamination could also occur during transportation or storage, as spoiled fish intestines are harmful to pets. He reassured the public that Gwadar’s sardines are safe for human consumption and continue to be exported in large quantities from Pakistan.
