No Flood Threat to Balochistan from Indus River, Says Irrigation Minister Sadiq Umrani

QUETTA:Central leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party and Balochistan’s Minister for Irrigation, Mir Sadiq Umrani, has stated that the flood threat from the Indus River has subsided and the situation is now normal. He confirmed that no region of Balochistan currently faces any flood risk.

Speaking to the media after a session of the Balochistan Assembly, the minister recalled the heavy damage caused in 2010 due to a breach at Tori Bund and emphasized that the government was determined to avoid a similar situation this year. He said that any future decisions regarding water levels would be made jointly by the Chief Ministers of Sindh and Balochistan.

Umrani further said that the provincial government’s primary goal was to protect human settlements from potential flooding. In preparation for any emergency, **16 flood camps** were established at vulnerable locations.

Praising the Sindh government’s proactive approach, he said they had developed an effective flood management strategy this year, ensuring that the flow of the Indus River was directed towards the sea. “Even if 1.1 million cusecs of water arrive, it will be safely passed through the Sukkur Barrage,” he added.

The minister expressed confidence in the inter-provincial coordination and reiterated that the situation remains under control.
