Cybercrime Agency Probes Sale of Citizens’ Mobile Data; New Revelations Surface

Islamabad: Following a report by Express News and subsequent notice by the Interior Minister, Pakistan’s National Cybercrime Agency (NCCIA) has launched a probe into the online sale of citizens’ mobile data, with new revelations emerging during the investigation.
According to sources, the probe has uncovered that, apart from websites, several mobile applications were also being used for selling stolen data. The NCCIA’s special team has expanded its analysis to include these apps alongside the websites.
Investigators are also examining whether the data theft occurred before or after 2023. Authorities have decided to arrest those involved in selling the data through these platforms.
Sources confirmed that the websites and applications involved have been identified and will be completely blocked in Pakistan. Legal action under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) will also be initiated against individuals found complicit in the data trade.
