Emergency Alert Issued as Heavy Floods Hit Ravi, Chenab and Sutlej Rivers

ISLAMABAD:Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an emergency alert after India released large volumes of water into the Ravi River and continuous heavy rains caused extraordinary flooding in the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers.
According to NDMA, India has released 200,000 cusecs of water into the Ravi, creating a severe flood threat for low-lying areas of Shahdara and Motorway-2. At Jassar, the river is currently experiencing a high flood flow of 170,000 cusecs, which could rise to 250,000 cusecs by morning.
The Chenab River is also witnessing a dangerous surge, with flow at Head Marala recorded at 770,000 cusecs—an extremely high flood level. At Khanki, the flow has reached 450,000 cusecs, creating severe flood conditions.
Similarly, in the Sutlej River, the flow at Ganda Singh Wala has reached 245,000 cusecs, classified as an extremely high flood, with further increase expected. NDMA has warned that flow here may rise to 280,000 cusecs within the next 12 hours.
Meanwhile, the Indus River at Sukkur Barrage is experiencing a low-level flood.
The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has directed local administrations to remain on high alert. NDMA has advised residents along rivers and waterways to immediately move to safe areas, strictly follow local authorities’ instructions, avoid unnecessary travel in flood-hit areas, and contact rescue teams in case of emergencies.
