Rare Case in India: Woman Found Pregnant in Liver Instead of Womb, Shocks Doctors

Mumbai– In a rare and shocking medical case, a 30-year-old woman from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was found to be carrying a fetus not in her uterus, but in her liver. The unusual pregnancy has captured the attention of medical professionals across India.
According to Indian media, the woman, a mother of two, had been experiencing severe abdominal pain for several weeks. After consulting multiple doctors and seeing no improvement, she underwent an MRI scan, which revealed a 12-week-old fetus developing in the right lobe of her liver.
Radiologist Dr. K.K. Gupta, who conducted the scan, confirmed the presence of the fetus and even detected a heartbeat during the examination. The woman, a homemaker, had been suffering from persistent pain for nearly two months, which baffled her doctors until the rare condition was discovered.
This case is believed to be the first of its kind reported in India. Dr. Gupta, who performed the scan on July 22, stated that such pregnancies are extremely rare, with only 18 similar cases documented globally.
This is a confirmed 12-week pregnancy, but it’s not in the uterus—it’s in the liver,” said Dr. Gupta. He explained that such ectopic pregnancies, particularly hepatic ones, are highly dangerous and cannot be sustained beyond 14 weeks due to the life-threatening risk to the mother.
The woman has since been referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for advanced medical care. Doctors are likely to perform surgery soon to terminate the pregnancy and prevent any fatal complications.
Ectopic pregnancies typically occur in the fallopian tubes, but in extremely rare cases like this, the embryo implants in other abdominal organs such as the liver—a condition that poses significant medical challenges.
