Türkiye Announces 229% Increase in Defense Spending Under New Economic Plan

ANKARA:Türkiye has announced a 229 percent increase in defense spending under its new medium-term economic program covering the period from 2027 to 2029.

According to Turkish media, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz presented the country’s three-year economic plan, saying that Türkiye’s goal in the defense industry is to become a country capable of developing its own technologies and increasing domestic production.

“We are increasing defense spending by 229 percent,” Yılmaz said.

The Turkish vice president added that inflation had entered a downward trend and that the government had made significant progress in its efforts to combat rising prices.

Yılmaz noted that global risks were also affecting the Turkish economy, saying the global economy had entered a new era in which economic, technological and geopolitical transformations were becoming increasingly interconnected.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Navy recently announced that Türkiye’s first aircraft carrier, **MUGEM**, is scheduled to be launched on September 27, 2027.

According to Turkish Navy Commander Admiral Ercüment Tatlıoğlu, construction of the vessel is progressing at a steady pace.

He said the aircraft carrier would be capable of operating unmanned aerial vehicles while also deploying unmanned surface and underwater vehicles from the ship.

“If we achieve this, we will become the first country in the world to operate an aircraft carrier of this kind,” the admiral said.
