Internet Blackouts and Travel Bans Violate Basic Rights, Says National Party

QUETTA:The central spokesperson of the National Party has condemned the suspension of internet services and inter-provincial travel restrictions, calling them blatant violations of fundamental human rights. In an official statement, the party emphasized that peace and order cannot be established by shutting down connectivity but through political wisdom, justice, national equality, and good governance.
The spokesperson stated that these actions reflect the state’s failure and disregard for constitutional norms. “Internet shutdowns and restrictions on public movement are not only unconstitutional but also regressively push the country away from global progress,” the statement read.
Highlighting the global context, the party said that high-speed internet is regarded as a cornerstone for development, education, economy, and public welfare across the world. “While nations are embracing technological advancements to usher in revolutionary change, Pakistan is pushing its citizens toward backwardness by cutting them off from the digital world,” the spokesperson added.
The statement also criticized the government’s labeling of social media as “mischief,” describing it as an attempt to hide its own shortcomings. “Calling social media a threat is simply an excuse to suppress voices of dissent and avoid accountability.”
The National Party called for the supremacy of the Constitution and law, the strengthening of Parliament, an independent judiciary, and a neutral Election Commission to safeguard public rights. “Only then can the government move away from reactionary policies and stop relying on irrational and negative rhetoric,” the statement concluded.
