Hundreds of Men and Women Killed in the Name of Honour in Balochistan

Quetta: A shocking revelation has come to light, indicating that hundreds of men and women have been murdered in Balochistan in the name of honour. According to a report by a non-governmental organization, 232 individuals have been killed over the past six years in the region due to “honour killings.”
The report provides detailed figures, showing that 73 murders occurred in Naseerabad, and 23 in Jaffarabad, both involving men and women. Other regions also saw numerous killings, with 18 deaths reported in Mastung, 17 in district Kachi, 18 in Jhal Magsi, and 11 in Quetta, all allegedly linked to the concept of ‘karo-kari’, a local term for honour killings.
The report also highlights a significant rise in such cases in recent years. In 2019, 52 people were killed in the name of honour, followed by 51 in 2020. In 2021, 24 individuals were killed, and in 2022, 28 people lost their lives. As of 2023, 24 more deaths have been recorded, and so far in 2024, 33 people have been murdered under the same pretext.
This year alone, 33 individuals have been killed, including 19 women and 14 men. The practice of honour killing continues to be a severe issue in the province, drawing attention to the deep-rooted cultural and societal challenges surrounding women’s rights and gender equality.
