French President Macron Labels May’s India-Pakistan Conflict as One of the Most Intense Air Battles in Recent Decades

Paris, FranceضFrench President Emmanuel Macron has categorized the May India-Pakistan conflict as one of the most severe aerial confrontations in recent decades. His comments came on Sunday during the announcement of France’s plans to increase defense spending.

In a bold statement, Macron revealed that France would be accelerating its defense budget from the originally planned 2030 target to 2027, pledging to double the defense spending. The current military budget of 32 billion euros, set in 2017, will increase to 64 billion euros by 2027.

President Macron stressed the importance of bolstering defense capabilities in light of the shifting global security landscape. He referred to the recent India-Pakistan clashes as an example of how major global conflicts are escalating, mentioning the bombing in Iran, clashes between India and Pakistan, including what he described as “perhaps the most intense air battle of recent decades,” and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Macron emphasized that in today’s world, to remain free and secure, nations must be powerful and strong. He reiterated that the only way for France to ensure its security and sovereignty was to increase its defense expenditure and strengthen the nation’s military capabilities.

Regarding the India-Pakistan conflict, Macron referred to the aerial engagements that took place between the two nuclear-armed nations, where Indian forces launched attacks on five locations in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir on the nights of May 6 and 7. In retaliation, Pakistan’s military shot down five Indian aircraft. Despite repeated warnings from Pakistan, India continued its aggressive stance, launching drone strikes and attempting missile attacks on Pakistani airbases.

In response, Pakistan launched a strong counter-offensive, targeting and destroying several Indian airfields, including those at Udhampur, Adampur, and Pathankot. Additionally, Pakistan executed a cyberattack on India’s electricity grid, crippling the power system in Maharashtra, and also jammed Indian military satellites.

President Macron’s remarks have further highlighted the growing concern over the instability in South Asia and the global repercussions of such military escalations.
