PM Shehbaz Sharif Dismisses Rumors of Presidential Change, Calls Them Baseless

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has categorically rejected circulating rumors suggesting that President Asif Ali Zardari might be asked to resign or that Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir has ambitions to become the next President of Pakistan.

Labeling the speculation as “baseless gossip,” the Prime Minister affirmed that there is no truth to these claims. Citing senior journalist Ansar Abbasi, Shehbaz Sharif clarified that General Munir has never expressed any desire to assume the presidency, nor is such a proposal under consideration by the government or any segment of the establishment.

PM Shehbaz emphasized the strong and respectful partnership between himself, President Zardari, and General Munir, united by a shared vision for Pakistan’s progress and stability.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also issued a statement via X (formerly Twitter), denouncing the rumors as part of a “malicious propaganda campaign.” He hinted at the involvement of foreign elements in spreading these false narratives, aiming to destabilize the country.

“There has been no discussion, nor is there any plan for the President to resign or for the Army Chief to pursue the presidency,” Naqvi said, adding, “We know who is behind this campaign, and we will not let such elements derail Pakistan’s stability.”

Senate Chairman and former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani also dismissed the reports, calling them “fabricated and misleading.”

The unified denial by top government and coalition leaders indicates a firm stance against misinformation and an effort to maintain political stability amidst ongoing national challenges.
