Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Orders Arrest of MS and CEO Health of Pakpattan; Social Media Pushes Government to Act

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered the arrest of the Medical Superintendent (MS) and the CEO of Health in Pakpattan during her visit to the District Hospital. Both officials were promptly arrested following her instructions.
Social media users have been vocal about the arrests, with many praising the role of online platforms in bringing attention to the issue. One user pointed out that the arrest of those responsible for the deaths of 20 children in Pakpattan would not have happened if it weren’t for social media, which forced the provincial government to take action. “Had it not been for social media, the responsible individuals would have been given a clean chit right after the incident,” the user remarked.

Kashif Baloch, another user, wrote that the residents of Pakpattan had urged Maryam Nawaz, whom they called a “TikTok Chief Minister,” to take action after being deprived of medicines and healthcare facilities.

It is worth noting that between June 16 and June 22, 20 children lost their lives at the District Hospital in Pakpattan. The families of the deceased children alleged that the deaths were due to negligence and a shortage of oxygen.
Preliminary reports from the Health Department and the Commissioner of Sahiwal suggested that 15 children died after being transferred to private hospitals in a critical condition, while 5 others died due to the incompetence of untrained midwives.
The inquiry report highlighted that while essential equipment was available in the hospital, it was not being utilized. Delays in patient care were attributed to the apathy of consultants, doctors, and staff. The report also revealed that skilled doctors did not make rounds during night shifts, and although incubators and pads were available, they were non-functional. Furthermore, emergency protocols were not followed, and the critical care staff lacked proper training.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many now demanding accountability for the tragic deaths of innocent children.
