Monsoon Rains Claim 45 Lives, 68 Injured, Alerts Issued for Further Weather Risks

Islamabad: Since the start of the monsoon season, at least 45 people have lost their lives, and 68 others have been injured across various regions of Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported. The monsoon rains, which began on June 26, have continued to cause widespread damage, with heavy downpours still affecting parts of the country.
According to the NDMA, rainfall before the official start of the monsoon had already led to fatalities, and the current heavy rains have raised river levels dangerously high, resulting in floods in many areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh.
The NDMA issued fresh alerts, warning of severe weather conditions, including strong winds and thunderstorms, expected to last until July 5. The authority emphasized the need for local administrations at the provincial and district levels to be on high alert and prepared for any emergencies.
The NDMA also advised the public, particularly those living in vulnerable areas, to stay informed about weather conditions and follow instructions from authorities. It warned citizens to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers, streams, and flood-affected roads.
As of now, the NDMA reports that 68 individuals have been injured, including 23 children, 12 men, and 10 women. The most significant number of deaths occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where 21 people lost their lives. Punjab recorded 13 fatalities, Sindh seven, and Balochistan four.
The report indicated that floods caused the majority of the deaths, followed by electrocution, lightning strikes, and other incidents. Last week, 12 tourists were swept away by severe flooding in the Swat River, with most of their bodies recovered.
The NDMA urged all residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves during this ongoing monsoon season.
