Indian Air Chief Slams Defense Delays: “Not a Single Project Completed on Time”

New Delhi: In a rare and blunt admission, Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari (reported here as Amar Preet Singh) publicly criticized India’s defense planning and procurement processes, revealing that “not a single defense project in India has ever been completed on time.”
Speaking at the annual business conference of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Delhi, the Air Chief expressed strong dissatisfaction with the country’s defense project timelines, agreements, and frequent delays.
“When we sign a contract, we already know it won’t be completed on time — yet we still sign it,” he stated. He urged India to move beyond paper-based planning and to focus on designing and completing its own defense systems within realistic timelines.
Air Chief Marshal Singh questioned the logic behind setting “unrealistic timelines” and making promises that cannot be fulfilled, adding that this culture of inefficiency hampers the nation’s military readiness.
Supporting his claims, prominent Indian defense analyst Sushant Sareen also criticized the government, stating that if such delays had not occurred in the past, India might have avoided significant losses in its recent conflict with Pakistan.
Sareen attributed the sluggish pace of defense projects largely to “political interference,” calling for urgent structural reforms.
These remarks come shortly after India reportedly suffered military setbacks in Pakistan’s recent Operation Bunyān Mursassas, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of India’s current defense preparedness.
