Apple Likely to Rebrand iOS to “iOS 26” in Major Operating System Overhaul

Cupertino:In a significant shift, Apple is reportedly planning a major rebranding of its operating systems, including iOS, as part of efforts to unify naming conventions across its ecosystem. According to a Bloomberg report, the tech giant is considering renaming its next iPhone operating system not as **iOS 19**, but as **iOS 26**.
The current operating system, **iOS 18**, is expected to be succeeded in **September 2025**. However, the report indicates that Apple might leapfrog several version numbers to align all of its platforms under a single naming structure.
In addition to **iOS 26**, other Apple operating systems are also expected to follow suit:
* **iPadOS 26**
* **macOS 26**
* **watchOS 26**
* **visionOS 26**
This change is aimed at eliminating confusion created by the varied version numbers of Apple’s software platforms, which stem from their staggered introductions over the years. For instance, while iPhones run iOS 18, the Apple Watch runs watchOS 12, Macs run macOS 15, and Apple Vision Pro operates on visionOS 2.
The unified versioning strategy is expected to be officially announced during **Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC)** on **June 9**. This alignment will not only streamline branding but also help developers and users track updates more intuitively across Apple’s hardware lineup.
However, the report did not indicate any immediate plans to change the naming convention of the iPhone itself. Apple released the **iPhone 16** last year and is expected to unveil the **iPhone 17 series** in **September 2025**, sticking with its current numeric progression.
This move marks another calculated branding evolution by Apple as it continues to integrate its diverse product ecosystem under a consistent and recognizable structure.
