Tensions Escalate: Targeting Indian Water Reservoirs an Option, Says Defence Minister Khawaja Asif

Islamabad – Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has warned that amid heightened tensions with India, targeting Indian water reservoirs could be considered a strategic option.
Speaking to media representatives at Parliament House, Asif described the current situation as “serious and concerning,” noting that tensions have not de-escalated. He indicated that the conflict could intensify further, referencing an attack on the Neelum-Jhelum project as a recent flashpoint.
“In circumstances like these, a response is inevitable,” Asif said. “If there is consensus on this strategy, then retaliating by targeting Indian water infrastructure could be one of the options.”
The minister also stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would take the parliament and public into confidence regarding the ongoing situation. He reiterated Pakistan’s offer to investigate the Pulwama-like incident, saying that the proposal remains on the table.
“There can be no trade dialogue under the current war-like conditions — all channels are presently closed,” Asif added.
Responding to questions about international pressure, Asif claimed there is none on Pakistan. “India initiated aggression, and we have responded accordingly. If further aggression occurs, we will respond again,” he asserted.
