Geopolitical Tensions Cast Doubt Over India’s Scheduled Cricket Tour to Bangladesh: BCCI Reportedly Hesitant

New Delhi/Dhaka:Amid rising geopolitical tensions in South Asia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly reconsidering the Indian national team’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh this August, according to *The Times of India*.
The tour, part of the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP), includes three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 matches planned for Dhaka and Chattogram. However, the series now appears uncertain due to strained India-Bangladesh relations and broader regional concerns stemming from recent escalations between India and Pakistan.
A significant source of tension reportedly stems from a controversial Facebook post by retired Bangladeshi Major General A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman. In the post, Rahman suggested that if India were to attack Pakistan, Bangladesh should seize India’s seven northeastern states and collaborate with China on a joint military strategy. His comments have triggered alarm in diplomatic circles and may be influencing BCCI’s reluctance to proceed with the tour.
Despite the speculation, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Director Nizamuddin Chowdhury dismissed concerns, stating, “As far as we know, everything is proceeding as per schedule. Our relations with the BCCI remain strong, and we expect India to tour as planned.”
In an attempt to defuse the situation, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a formal statement distancing itself from Rahman’s views, emphasizing that his remarks were personal and do not reflect the government’s official stance. The ministry reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and regional stability.
Nonetheless, analysts believe BCCI’s waning interest may be linked not only to Rahman’s remarks but also to a broader shift in India’s foreign policy, marked by a more assertive diplomatic posture toward its neighbors.
Adding to the uncertainty, the *Times of India* report also hinted at possible delays or complications regarding the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup, which India is set to host in September. The event, potentially affected by diplomatic tensions with both Pakistan and Bangladesh, may face logistical and political challenges, complicating any near-term bilateral or multilateral cricket engagements.
