Balochistan Marks International Workers’ Day with Protests, Calls for Improved Worker Rights and Economic Reforms

Quetta – On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, various labor unions, including the All Pakistan Federation of Trade Unions, Balochistan Labor Federation, Pakistan Workers Confederation Balochistan, and All Pakistan United Irrigation Employees Federation, organized rallies, protests, and sessions across Balochistan to honor the memory of the 1886 Chicago labor martyrs.
The largest rally took place in Quetta at the Metropolitan Corporation’s Green Lawn, presided over by Haji Muhammad Ramadan Achakzai, with special guest Khan Zaman. The event saw speeches from various labor federation leaders, including Abdul Hai, Haji Bashir Ahmed, Abdul Baqi Lehri, Qasim Khan Kakar, Muhammad Yar Alizai, Muhammad Yusuf Kakar, and others.
Before the speeches, participants stood in a one-minute silence to pay tribute to the Chicago martyrs of 1886. Speakers highlighted that the observance of May 1st serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by workers in Chicago, who fought for their rights under dire conditions in the late 19th century. They shared how the capitalistic system at the time subjected workers to inhumane conditions, including 12 to 18-hour workdays, no days off, and harsh punishment for minor mistakes. This oppression led workers to sacrifice their lives to begin the labor movement, which laid the foundation for the recognition of labor rights globally.
The speakers pointed out that the current state of workers in Pakistan is worse than the conditions faced by the Chicago martyrs. Millions of workers still lack basic facilities like health and safety provisions and social security. The increasing inflation and unemployment have made it difficult for the common man, especially the working class, to survive. Many workers are struggling to feed their families and educate their children in the face of soaring prices.
Furthermore, the speakers addressed how the current economic and political situation in the country has adversely affected the national economy, with the working class bearing the brunt of it. The rise of privatization, globalization, and the free-market economy has only served to limit the power of workers and trade unions, while further empowering industrialists and capitalists.
They strongly opposed the privatization of national institutions, which has led to massive job losses, as well as the weakening of trade unions. The speakers emphasized that the labor class in Pakistan will continue its struggle against privatization and demand their rights through a collective, organized effort. They called for increased representation of workers in political and parliamentary spaces to ensure their voices are heard.
During the session, multiple resolutions were passed, including demands for a reduction in the prices of petroleum products, electricity, gas, and essential food items. The workers also demanded a 300% increase in salaries and pensions to keep pace with inflation, as well as a revision of the minimum wage to be equal to the price of one tola (gold).
Additionally, the cancellation of a controversial decision to cancel the registration of 62 unions in Balochistan was demanded. The protestors also called for the government to uphold the rights of unions in all public and private sectors in the province and recognize the right to unionize.
The session closed with a call for political negotiations to address the province’s issues, a demand for the release of political detainees, and a resolution to end extrajudicial killings, disappearances, and all forms of terrorism.
A final resolution called on the government to enact labor laws at both the national and provincial levels to address the workers’ challenges. These resolutions were approved by the rally participants, with unanimous support.
This demonstration underlined the ongoing struggles of workers in Pakistan, highlighting both local and global labor issues and calling for urgent political and economic reforms.
