UN Security Council Condemns Incident in Pulwama, Pakistan’s Diplomacy Prevails

Islamabad: The United Nations Security Council has condemned the incident in the Pulwama region of occupied Kashmir, but India’s attempt to issue a statement against Pakistan has failed. Unlike its statement following the Pulwama attack, India’s desire for a strong and harsh language was not realized, thanks to Pakistan’s effective diplomacy.
The UN Security Council expressed its concern over the incident in occupied Kashmir, but unlike the statement after the Pulwama attack, no harsh language was used. The council’s statement, which was proposed by the United States, avoided the specific wording that India sought. Pakistan successfully lobbied to ensure that no controversial terms were included.
Pakistan also ensured that the term “Jammu and Kashmir” was included in the statement, while India had sought to use the term “Pahalgam” in order to reinforce the perception that occupied Kashmir had been fully annexed by India. India’s failure to have the term “Pahalgam” included, coupled with the fact that the statement came four days after the incident—on April 26—meant that India was unable to immediately issue a condemnation.
A UN official stated that the United Nations is closely monitoring the situation in the region with great concern and urged both India and Pakistan to exercise extreme caution and restraint to prevent further escalation.
