KE’s Outstanding Dues Reach Rs 76 Billion, Requests Approval for Additional Losses

Islamabad: The outstanding dues of K-Electric (KE), the company responsible for providing electricity to Karachi, have surged to an alarming Rs 76 billion. The company has once again requested approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for an additional Rs 8.131 billion in losses, which will either be passed on to the federal government or burden the already struggling electricity consumers.
According to a notice issued by NEPRA, K-Electric’s latest demand is based on Rs 67.902 billion in irrecoverable billing for the Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) period from 2017 to 2023.
Earlier, in December 2024, NEPRA held a public hearing regarding KE’s request for Rs 67.9 billion, where the majority of participating consumers strongly opposed the idea of shifting the burden of these losses to consumers or the state.
The situation reflects the ongoing financial challenges faced by K-Electric and the strain on Karachi’s electricity consumers, raising concerns over the long-term sustainability of the power sector in the region.
