National Assembly Approves Amendments to Defence Forces Act 2026 and National Command Authority Act

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Thursday approved amendments to the Defence Forces Act 2026 and the National Command Authority Act.

The bills proposing amendments to both laws were presented in the National Assembly, while the opposition staged a walkout during the proceedings. Despite the opposition’s absence, both bills were passed by a majority vote.

Earlier, the federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, had approved the draft Defence Forces Act 2026 as well as amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010.

According to the government, the Defence Forces Act 2026 has been drafted as part of the changes introduced following the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The draft law seeks to define the administrative and legal framework concerning the office of the Chief of Defence Forces and the headquarters of the Chief of Defence Forces.

The cabinet also approved amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010.

According to the government, amendments to the National Command Authority Act became necessary following the 27th Constitutional Amendment. The changes are aimed at aligning the relevant legal and administrative matters with the new constitutional framework.
