Electricity Relief Set to End, Raising Risk of Higher Power Bills in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD:A major relief for electricity consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi, is set to expire this month, raising the possibility of higher electricity bills from next month.

The relief, amounting to Rs1.99 per unit under the quarterly tariff adjustment, will end in August. Consumers may therefore face an increase in electricity prices under the next quarterly adjustment starting September.

According to sources, electricity consumers across the country are currently receiving relief of more than Rs67.17 billion under the quarterly adjustment for January to March 2026. The adjustment, which has been in effect since June 2026, will complete its three-month period this month.

The quarterly adjustment for April to June 2026 is expected to take effect from next month.

Power distribution companies have submitted applications to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), seeking to transfer an additional burden of more than Rs23 billion to consumers. This would amount to an increase of approximately Rs1 per unit.

However, the final increase in the quarterly adjustment will be determined by NEPRA.
