Quetta Traders Demand Immediate Security Measures Amid Rising Crime, Criticize Police Inaction
QUETTA: The Central Traders Association of Balochistan has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Quetta, particularly in the Hazarganji Commercial Zone, and urged authorities to take immediate action to protect traders, transporters, and the public from rising crime.
In a joint statement, Central Traders Association President Rahim Kakar, along with Hazarganji Zone representatives and other cabinet members, said the jurisdiction of Shalkot Police Station, especially the Hazarganji Commercial Zone, has witnessed an alarming increase in robberies, thefts, motorcycle snatching, armed muggings, and other violent crimes.
The association stated that Hazarganji is one of Balochistan’s most important commercial hubs, attracting thousands of traders, transporters, laborers, and customers every day. However, it alleged that criminals are openly committing armed robberies in broad daylight, looting cash worth millions of rupees and escaping without resistance. In some cases, traders who resisted were reportedly shot dead or injured.
The traders claimed that despite repeatedly requesting the Shalkot Police Station authorities to increase police patrols, take action against criminal elements, and improve security arrangements, no meaningful response has been received. They said the lack of effective policing has emboldened criminal groups and created an atmosphere of fear among the business community.
According to the statement, the security situation is not confined to Hazarganji alone, as crimes have also increased in Satellite Town, Naya Adda, Sariab Road, Spiny Road, Brewery Road, and other parts of Quetta. The association alleged that incidents of armed robbery, vehicle and motorcycle theft, and street crime have become more frequent, affecting traders, transporters, investors, and ordinary citizens alike.
The traders further noted that although substantial public funds are allocated annually for maintaining law and order, the public has seen little practical benefit. They argued that the continued inability to ensure the safety of citizens and businesses raises serious questions about the performance of the relevant institutions.
The Central Traders Association called on the Inspector General of Police Balochistan, the Deputy Inspector General of Police Quetta, the SSP Operations, and other senior officials to immediately review the security situation in the Shalkot Police Station jurisdiction, particularly in the Hazarganji Commercial Zone. The association demanded increased police patrols, an indiscriminate crackdown on criminal elements, and urgent measures to safeguard the lives and property of traders, transporters, and residents, warning that the business community may be compelled to launch protests if the situation does not improve.
