Pakistan Approves National Agricultural Biotechnology Policy 2025 to Boost Modern Farming and Farmers’ Growth

Islamabad: The Government of Pakistan has approved the National Agricultural Biotechnology Policy 2025, marking a significant step toward modernizing the country’s agricultural sector and promoting scientific farming practices.

The policy was approved by the Federal Cabinet under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. It aims to enhance agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, support farmers, encourage responsible investment, and promote the adoption of advanced agricultural technologies.

Developed after a two-and-a-half-year consultative process, the policy was formulated with input from scientists, farmers, industry representatives, and relevant government institutions to ensure a comprehensive and practical framework for agricultural development.

According to the government, the adoption of modern biotechnology will help increase crop yields, reduce production losses, and enable farmers to better cope with climate-related challenges.

As part of the initiative, genetically modified (GM) maize has received approval after successfully completing Pakistan’s regulatory and biosafety requirements. Officials expect that the use of advanced agricultural technology will significantly enhance maize production and exports.

The government projects that Pakistan’s maize exports could increase from the current value of approximately $288–345 million to $1 billion, driven by improved productivity and competitiveness in international markets.

Authorities believe that the effective implementation of the National Agricultural Biotechnology Policy 2025 will play a vital role in increasing agricultural output, boosting exports, and improving farmers’ incomes while strengthening the country’s long-term food security.
