Enhancing Fisheries Sector in Balochistan: Government Takes Key Initiatives

Karachi:The Balochistan government is implementing several measures to boost production in the fisheries sector, including stabilizing policy incentives, allocating funds in the budget, and investing in the Fishermen Endowment Fund to improve community welfare.

Nisar Mirani, Director of the Fisheries Development Board, stated that the government is working on a comprehensive policy framework to curb illegal fishing. He emphasized that fisheries play a crucial role in the region’s economy, providing employment to thousands across the expansive 770-kilometer coastal stretch of Balochistan.

The fisheries industry significantly contributes to Pakistan’s foreign exchange earnings through fish exports. However, challenges such as overfishing, illegal practices, pollution, and climate change are threatening the sustainability of this vital sector.

John Muhammad Baloch, an exporter from Givani, highlighted the need for regulations to manage fish stocks and protect local livelihoods. He pointed out that industrial waste and coastal development activities are harming marine habitats.

Despite these challenges, Mirani expressed optimism for sustainable growth in the fisheries sector with the right policies and investments. Training programs for fishermen and the adoption of modern fishing techniques could enhance the quality and value of fish products, promoting long-term viability in the industry.
