Met Department Warns of Reduced Rainfall in Pakistan as El Niño Conditions Return After 2016

KARACHI:The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that reduced rainfall is expected in the country as El Niño conditions become active again after 2016.

According to the Met Office, upper regions of Pakistan may experience thunderstorms and rainfall accompanied by strong winds until June 5. The recent weather activity is linked to a western disturbance system that also brought rain to several parts of Sindh during the past night.

In the last 24 hours, Mohenjo Daro recorded 32 millimeters of rainfall, while Mando Dero in Rohri received 20 millimeters along with wind speeds reaching up to 104 kilometers per hour.

Officials said that under the influence of the system, rain may continue in Khairpur, Dadu, Ghotki, Tharparkar, and nearby districts.

For Karachi, the Met Department forecast continued hot and humid conditions over the coming days, with temperatures expected to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius.

The department further stated that El Niño conditions are developing in the Pacific Ocean, a climate phenomenon known to influence weather patterns worldwide. It added that Pakistan could experience below-normal rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season, particularly in Sindh and the Tharparkar region.

El Niño refers to a climate pattern caused by unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. It can lead to droughts in some regions and heavy rainfall in others.

Meteorologists warned that reduced rainfall could have implications for agriculture in Pakistan, an agrarian economy that depends heavily on seasonal rains.
