Sindh Govt Decides to Build Modern Heavy Traffic Terminal Outside Karachi

Karachi: The Government of Sindh has decided to establish a modern terminal for trucks, trailers, and heavy transport vehicles outside Karachi, along with a dedicated heavy vehicle track linking Karachi Port to the proposed terminal at Northern Bypass.
According to Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, the heavy traffic terminal will be constructed at Northern Bypass, while a dedicated corridor will be developed from the port to the terminal to streamline freight movement.
He said the project will help reduce heavy traffic pressure inside the city and improve the overall transportation system.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (Sindh Mass Transit Authority) board, which also approved several major urban transport initiatives, including EV taxis, 500 buses, and double-decker bus projects.
The meeting was chaired by Sharjeel Inam Memon and attended by Mayor Sukkur Arslan Islam Shaikh, Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, MD SMTA Saleemullah Odho, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, and other senior officials.
Officials reviewed multiple transport projects aimed at improving public mobility in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting eco-friendly transportation.
The board approved the launch of an EV taxi service in Karachi, with plans to expedite financial evaluation for the project this month.
It was also decided to procure 50 new double-decker buses for Karachi. Each bus will have a capacity of 126 passengers to ease pressure on the city’s public transport system.
Additionally, 500 pink EV scooters will be purchased for women. The first distribution of these scooters will take place in Hyderabad on May 22.
Sharjeel Inam Memon said the pink EV scooter scheme has played an important role in empowering women and changing societal perceptions.
Under a public-private partnership model, 500 electric buses will also be introduced, with 450 operating in Karachi across 25 routes and 50 in Hyderabad across five routes.
The government also plans to establish five modern depots across the province—four in Karachi and one in Hyderabad.
Officials added that the next phase of EV buses will begin in Sukkur, extending modern and eco-friendly transport facilities to other districts of Sindh.
The board also approved the construction of a parking plaza near Maula Ali shrine in Hyderabad to facilitate visitors and citizens.
It was further decided that all future traffic signals in the province will be operated on solar power systems.
